My name is Tom Hersey and I am a junior communication major here at the University at Buffalo. I’ve lived here in Buffalo my whole life, in the Town of Tonawanda to be exact and I attended Kenmore West High School. I’m not exactly sure what I would like to do with my communication degree, but I do know that I want my career to be involved with sports, whether it’s for a professional team or for ESPN. I am a die-hard sports fan, especially football. I played sports my whole life, and now I coach little league football for 7, 8 and 9 year olds. I am a second year season ticket holder for the Buffalo Bills with 4 of my friends and I truly believe it has been one of the best investments of my life.
Right now I live a pretty busy life. I go to school Monday, Wednesday and Thursday night Friday and work Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I have 3 part-time jobs, I work as a cook at a restaurant, I’m a bartender at HSBC Arena for the Sabres games and in the summer and fall I help my uncle do fundraising for about 35 high school football teams in Western New York. My job at HSBC is bar far the most interesting. I started off working there as a drink runner, so the bartender would make drinks and I would take them out to fans in their seats in the 2oo level. So basically, I was getting paid to watch the Sabres games. Now I’m the bartender making the drinks, so I don’t get to see the game, but I make good money and don’t have to deal with drunk, obnoxious fans.
When I am not bust with school or work or coaching, I like to hang out with my friends. Just like any other college student we like to go out, go to the movies or just hang out at someone’s house or apartment. I like to watch almost any kind of sport on TV. This past summer was great, because I love watching the Olympics and this year was a pretty historical year. My favorite band would hands down have to be the Goo Goo Dolls. Living in Buffalo your whole life, you got to have love for the home town. I have even made an omlette for Robby Takac when he came into the restaurant that I work at. That might sound pretty lame, but I was excited.
I hope to get a lot out of this class this semester. Living in a world where the internet plays a huge role in our everyday lives, it really helps to know a lot about it. Hopefully I will learn enough information to teach others and get them more educated about the internet.
